Comment by Susan Givens on May 19, 2012 at 3:58pm About making sales ---- the big mystery!
I have been selling on the internet since 1993. The first big smack of reality is that I am not going to ever be a "Top Seller". In order to be one of those, you have to develop a huge following. To do that, you have to get your products in brick-and-mortar stores. A gallery is nice. It's good if you don't have to make your items -- for instance, supply sellers can do very well.
And then there is the business end. How much office work do you want to do? Invoicing, wrapping, trips to the PO, feedback. And you have to be a marketing guru, too. That means newsletters, blogs, your own website, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest -- oh, and don't forget the craft fairs. Fame is costly.
Here is my philosophy--such as it is. Create for yourself. Enjoy every effort. I paint for my own pleasure. I am learning how to produce really nice photos. I collect books for my own enjoyment.
Most important is to be a good friend to many. Send surprise gifts, cards, whatever. On FB, pay attention to what interests your friends. Establish a network. Most of all, realize that you can't do all of this unless it is your sole interest. I rejoice that I can be a part of this very new era in our history. I grew up listening to the comics being read on Sunday on the radio!
