Hi Ladies, as some of you know I'm new to crochet and really enjoying it a lot. Is it my imagination but I find there seems to be variations to doing the double crochet?

When I watch tutorials, some people increase their rows by 2 chains, some by 3 chains. Can anybody explain this to me because it confuses me.

hi. It depends on what you are makeing and what your yarn is like.

This was addressed to 'Ladies', but I thought I'd throw in my two cents anyway :)

When I use double crochet to make an even fabric, I use three chains to start the next row.  the next row of stitches would be put into the top chain of the three chain stitch.  If you use three chains, then the first stitch of that row would be put into the SECOND stitch, and the ch3 would count as a stitch.  At times I've used just 2 chains (especially when using basketweave or another texture stitch), but when I do this, I put the first double crochet stitch into the first stitch in the row and do not count the ch2 as its own stitch.

I think it all depends on your personal technique and your tension when making the double crochet stitches versus chains.  My chains tend on the tightly stitched side, but my double crochets do not, so I typically do 3 chains and do the first double crochet in the first double crochet of the next row.  If my chains were more loosely stitched, they'd be taller so I'd only have to do two.
