How do you choose the material that your yarn is made of, or does that even matter?

I am truly new to this - only picked it up about a week ago... but I'm of the eco-mind when it comes to buying new things, even materials to work with, and I was trying to figure out all the different materials that the yarn is made of. I ended up with a Red Heart in heather grey to start practicing, but then picked up Lily Sugar 'n Cream since it's 100% USA-grown cotton.

Also, what are all the possibilities of yarn material? I'd like to know more about how they are made.

Thanks.

It really depends on what you are making.  I like to use higher-quality yarns for my shawls and scarves, also higher-end cottons and microfiber for spa cloths, but I use Sugar n' Cream for my Panties coozies and when I make baby bibs for charity.  My charity doll clothes are mostly washable yarns, preemie sets out of nice acrylic baby yarns, and microfiber for the Bust Mops, as it performs well in absorbing and wicking away moisture. I don't sell baby items, preemie items, hats (I make chemo hats) or doll clothes, as those all go to local charities.
By the way, I've been knitting since the age of 6 and crocheting since I was 19, in 1972!
