just taking a moment to say HI! Presently new-ish to zibbet though I've had a store for years.. but I'm going through some major transitions and need to keep more focused ... so anyway.. I've been crocheting for 20+ years - can read just about any pattern.. and teach at my local store (that I own.. lol)

anyway.. HI!

There is also openoffice.org which is a free office suite and includes it's own word processing program that is able to open and create word documents, and don't forget google docs.  I would think it would be pretty easy nowadays for most people to open a word file- not everyone automatically has a pdf reader either.

Sunfire, I have also tried hemp. I made a clutch and a basket, using fairly thin wieght. (I think I got it at the jewelry section in Walmart)

It also hurt my fingers, at one point I had to put wear band aides to finish.

Just pick the weight that would fit your project and give it a go! I actually liked doing it, the reward was well worth the effort (injury). Even tho I have yet to sell the clutch......I sold the basket.

Give it a try and see how you like it!

Frankie, I think people put patterns in pdf because anyone can open and read and print a pdf. Not everyone has word. And if you don't have word, opening i may be a problem. Having said that, Skydrive allows people without word to still view word documents online, and if you have a live.com or hotmail.com email you can access Skydrive. So you still may be able to reach those without Word. Just some things to think about.

SUNFIRE: I used hemp before to make a basket. Not sure what weight it was now that I think about it. It was the thicker kind. It really hurt my hand. I think I would use a thinner kind next time. And thank you for responding to my question! :)

Frankie - I have never worked with distributing patterns before, but I imagine if you set the document to Read only (or something to that effect), it should be okay.

Then again, I usually find patterns online and copy them into a text document on my computer, so I can easily add my own notes.

Oh hey, while I'm here, has anyone ever crocheted using hemp? What weight would you recommend?

I have a question. Is it bad form if you want to sell your patterns, to put them on "word" instead of PDF format? Any pointers anyone may have would be very much appreciated.

Just saying hi.  I just picked up crocheting about a week ago.  I just finished a scarf that I was working on.  It looks pretty good for a beginner, lol...I used to crochet when I was 12, but did not stick with it.  I'm glad that I decided to pick it up again.  I find it fun.
