ut oh...that is terrible news!

I am sure there are friends there, I hope everyone is ok...

Hiya.

It was in New Zealand in the South Island.

Looks pretty awful on the news just like the pictures we see from overseas!

The TV has constant news about it at the moment, people are dead and others trapped in buildings.

They've been through so much since they had the last one there on September 4th, loads of aftershocks and buildings were just starting to be rebuilt.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them. I only heard about it a couple of hours ago - shocking images on the news...  :(

As Jac-Ber says, the earthquake occured 10 kilometres South of Christchurch, in the South Island of New Zealand. :-) Not Australia.

I'm in the North Island, and to the best of my knowledge the North Island didn't feel a thing, so we're fine here, but Christchurch is a mess. People are in shock: they were still trying to get over the last earthquake (which struck at 04:30 on 4 September and so killed no-one), and now they've had this one at lunchtime today, which was smaller on the Richter Scale but caused far more damage because people were out and about instead of tucked up at home. There is an unknown number of fatalities, cars are crushed, buildings are flattened, the beautiful, historic Christchurch Cathedral has been badly damaged, and communications are down. New Zealand has accepted overseas aid to help with the search and rescue operations.

After the September quake, Christchurch was still experiencing aftershocks as late as this month, I believe. The experts were predicting a second big one, but they thought it would be smaller: about 5.5 on the Richter Scale, rather than the 6.3 that it was. The only good thing about it is that now it's over: the second quake has come and gone. Now they just have to deal with its aftershocks.

I am glad you are both ok, Jac-Ber and Silverlight!

Natural disasters are so difficult, words cannot explain.

Our hearts are with them.

I have a friend who lives in Christchurch. She is okay but really shaken up and tired of all of the earthquakes. Don't know any more than that. I hope that the Zibbeters who live in New Zealand are safe. I live in Southern California and I know about earthquakes...Very scary.

My thoughts are with the people of Christchurch and their families and friends. I can't imagine....

And my apologies for saying "Australia" - I did know it was NZ, but was thinkin' Aussie.......I tend to think of those two places as one...........regardless, a terrible, terrible event and my thoughts and prayers go out to those affected and to their loved ones, wherever they may be, who are still waiting for news.
No worries, Carolyn. We'll forgive you. ;-)
I have some friends who are moving there this week! I wonder how this will change things.

I will definitely be praying for all who are impacted by this.
